For
those fortunate enough to relocate to this peaceful valley, you will find
friendly neighbors, a strong community spirit, a growing business sector, and a
moderate cost of living and housing compared with Los Angeles, San Francisco,
Santa Barbara and San Diego.
We
are located between two major universities; University of California at
Santa Barbara is 60 miles to the southeast, and California Polytechnic State
University (Cal Poly) is 30 miles to the north. Santa Maria has a wonderful
community college, Hancock College, which offers many college classes as well
as technical and vocational classes. We are fortunate to have these campuses
close as they offer wonderful opportunities for all our community, i.e. weekend
classes, theatre, music, dance, viticulture, computer, etc.
Several communities comprise the central coast: Santa Maria,
Orcutt, Guadalupe, Los Alamos, Buellton, Santa Ynez, Solvang, Los Olivos,
Nipomo, Grover Beach, Arroyo Grande, Shell Beach, Oceano, Pismo Beach, Avila
Beach, Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo. Each has a distinct "personality" all its
own. These are all great places to go exploring. With wonderful shopping,
wineries, drives and special events going all the time, there is never a lack
of fun things to do.
From the local custom of celebrating the end of "round-up" on
cattle ranches, the Santa Maria Style Barbecue still flourishes as a widely
known attraction. Top sirloin of beef is cooked over chunks of locally grown
red oak, seasoned, and served with salsa, sweet buttered French bread and
salad. This wonderful meal is often found being cooked on street corners on
weekends. This is a popular way for non-profit organizations, schools and
sporting leagues to raise funds for their programs.
